Biomedical Sciences and Translational Medicine

The PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences and Translational Medicine is aimed at graduates from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, who are strongly motivated to address advanced experimental research in preclinical or clinical biomedicine. The founding principles of the PhD Programme are: i) a multidisciplinary cultural approach to training in biomedical sciences and ii) the aim of promoting the integration of preclinical and clinical research. The general objectives are to generate new knowledge on the pathophysiology of diseases, identify useful biomarkers for diagnosis and targets for the development of innovative drugs, and enhance their transfer to medical sciences.

Educational goals

The PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences and Translational Medicine aims to provide a solid foundation in biomedical disciplines. Advanced methodological approaches, applied in a multidisciplinary context, enable the acquisition of new knowledge on the pathophysiology of diseases, which can be translated into new diagnostic procedures and therapeutic strategies.

Specifically, the main objectives are:

  1. To ensure interdisciplinary training in the scientific approach to biomedicine;
  2. To foster strong integration and mutual validation between basic, clinical, and applied research;
  3. To foster the ability to independently manage research projects, write scientific manuscripts, and effectively communicate research findings in both national and international specialized contexts and in popular contexts;
  4. To train researchers with adequate knowledge of private and public, national and international research funding systems, and to prepare them to submit research projects for competitive calls;
  5. To train professionals capable of responding to the challenges posed by prevalent and emerging diseases, addressing rapid technological changes, promoting the transfer of basic discoveries to medical sciences, and aware of the increased demands for productive returns on scientific research.

The PhD Programme is divided into three curricula: despite their specificity, they are strongly integrated with each other.
